camcorder around xmas time?

for xmas i want a camcorder, but am only having £100 spent on xmas and was wondering if anyone knows a good camcorder for £100 or under. which will probably go down in price in the xmas sales although i cant remmebr when they are before or after xmas but that doesnt really matter. and i know this is ages before xmas but my mum said i have to find out one that i want.

Have a look at the Kodak Zx1.
There are reviews of it on Amazon and Youtube and it looks like a decent bit of kit.
It also has an SD card slot and takes normal AA rechargeable batteries.

i just bought a DVD camcorder…?

it records on mini discs. I got the mini discs that you can use over and over since its cheaper. I am trying to copy the movies onto a larger disc so i can reuse the mini. The computer won’t let me. I have a dvd burner, i’ve initialized and finalized the discs, both DVD’s (mini and reg size) are the proper format as far as the construction is concerned… (RW-, RW+, etc.)
when i go to copy it on my computer, it lets me watch it but not copy it to the computer so i can burn it to a disc. The sales rep said i wouldnt need a special software. HELP!!! im ready to throw the thing out the window!!!

Try it this way

Use a programme such as Ulead VideoStudio – you take the mini-disc out of your camcorder and put it into the DVD tray of your PC making sure it sits centrally in the little depression made for it.

Inside VideoStudio you select “Insert DVD” and point the programme at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the timeline of VideoStudio so that you can edit it – add lots of different videos together – add titles/music/narration – and finally burn to a full size DVD to play in a standard player.

Canon XL2 Mini DV Digital Camcorder Video to Computer?

How would I transfer the data (video) I’ve recorded on the mini DV cassette onto my laptop, where it can be edited? FireWire? I don’t think the camcorder came with the necessary USB extensions.

ALL minDV tape camcorders use Firewire for video-to-computer.

All miniDV tape camcorder have a 4-pin DV port. Whether the other side of the cable needs to be 4-pin, 6-pin or 9-pin depends on the computer’s firewire port.

If your computer has no firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot (PCI for desktop/tower; PCMCIA or ExpressCard for Laptop – if there is even a port). Since you only told us your computer is a laptop – but no manufacturer or model there is not much more we can do to assist.

If you read the manual, you will not find a USB port on the XL2 – so there won’t be any “extensions” or drivers to get.

Refer to page 101, Connecting to the computer using a DV (IEEE1394) cable.

In this context, DV, Firewire, IEEE1394 and i.LINK are all the same thing – and they are not USB. Even is the XL2 had a USB port, it wouldn’t work. USB-firewire cable/converter/adapter/hub things won’t work, either.

Any miniDV tape based camcorder can transfer standard definition DV with your configuration – you need to get a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to connect the camcorder’s DV port to the Mac’s firewire400 port. All Mac’s made in about the last 10 years came standard with a Firewire 400 port. The only exception is the new MacBook Air. Video from miniDV tape provides the best available video quality. If you do high definition, HDV, you need to to a custom installation of the Apple Intermediate Codec from the MacOSX system discs – it is a QuickTime component.
Consumer Low end:
Canon ZR900, ZR930 (have a mic jack, but no manual audio control)
Consumer Mid:
Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7, HC9 (have a mic jack, manual audio control, but small lenses because they are consumer)
Consumer high – or “prosumer”:
Sony DCR-VX2100, Canon GL2, Panasonic DVX100 series (standard definition only)
Sony HDR-FX1
Low-end pro:
Canon XHA1, Sony HVR-V1U, HVR-Z1U, Panasonic HDX200 series

Any hard drive or flash memory camcorder can copy highly compressed standard definition MPEG2 video data file – you need to download and install StreamClip

and convert those data files to something iMovie likes… .mov, .dv, .mp4… Video from hard drive or flash memory camcorder is not as good as video from miniDV tape. If your Mac is Intel-chip based, any AVCHD camcorder will work – iMovieHD08 (or FinalCut Express 4 or FinalCut Pro2) is required to deal with AVCHD encoded video.
Whether MPEG2 or AVCHD, these compress too much. You won’t see any pros using this gear.

Any DVD based camcorder (but not any that encode to AVCHD) – IF you have a drawer loading DVD drive in (or connected to) your Mac… NEVER put an 8cm DVD or any other odd sized disc in a slot loader… Download and install HandBrake.

Rip the video and drag/drop to the iMovie clips pane or timeline. Warning: DVD camcorders are not recommended – they provide the worst available video for editing. I wish the manufacturers would stop making this garbage.
