bulb exposure without a remote?

i have a canon 50d and want to do a bulb exposure without having to hold the shutter button with my finger. but i dont have a remote. any other ways????

http://www.bhphotovideo.com You might be able to rig up something but its likely to fail or cause other problems. I learned long ago its always best to have the right tool for the job.

If the screen on my laptop is really dim when I boot it up, do I need a LCD screen backlight thing or Battery?

When I boot it up, I can still see the screen (barely) so I know the hard drive isn’t fried.

I’ve already tried using the Fn keys and they don’t work

Basically, the way to tell if the backlight has failed is to take it into a dark room.

If the screen does not emit ANY light, then the backlight has failed.

Canon Rebel XTi Settings for Photographing Meteors

Anyone out there have a Canon Rebel XTi and know what and how to set it up to photo the meteor shower tonight? I don’t have time to read the whole manual. I need to know what settings for white balance, shutter speed, ISO speed, etc….. I have the standard 18-55 lens on it with a tripod and remote shutter release. I know there are a lot of other varibles, just looking for a quick start and I will go from there. Please only answers pretaining to the type camera mentioned, don’t tell me about an auto focus point and shoot. Thanks.
Just to add, I know about photography, have several manuals. Just looking for some quick recommendations for ISO speed, White balance, shutter speed, f-stop, exposure time. PLEASE don’t tell me to put it on an auto setting. I have experience in outdoor, lanscapes, wildlife and waterfalls. Never shot anything in very very low light conditions. And the meteor shower peaks tonight. Thanks

Ok, the other answer wasn’t very good. I know the peak for the Perseids has passed, but there are several meteor showers you can photograph, so you’ll probably still want to know. (You can still photograph the Perseids, there just won’t be up to 90/hr like there was on Tuesday morning.)

Most obvious is that you need your camera on a tripod. Also, you need to get away from any light polluting sources. You’ll want to check when the moon set is. For example, on August 12, 2008, the moon set in my area was around 2:30 AM. After this time and assuming you are away any big city, you’ll have a fairly dark sky.

Set your camera on M. You’ll be (manually) focused at infinity, As to what focal length, it really depends on your composition. Practically any with that lens will work. You’ll need a shutter release cable that has a lock on it for really long exposures if you choose. Now onto the question of aperture, iso, and shutter speed.

Let’s tackle ISO first, since it is the most straight forward. Set your camera to ISO 400. It is still pretty clean and is sensitive enough that it will pick up the fainter meteors. If you were using a faster lens, you could use ISO 200 (f/2.8 lens) or ISO 100 (f/2 and below).

For the aperture you want to be about 1 stop less than wide open. So if you use 18mm, you would want to be at f/5. At 55mm, you’d want to be at f/8.

Now for the shutter speed. This is a matter of personal preference. If you want the stars to be points and not show trails, a general rule for shutter speed on the XTi is 600 / (1.6 * focal length). So at 18mm, you could do a maximum 20 second exposure. At 55mm, a maximum of 6 seconds.

The next general formula is that if you don’t mind star trails but don’t want the sky to fog up. Your maximum shutter speed in minutes then becomes the square of the aperture. So for example, at f/5 your shutter should be opened no longer than 25 minutes.

As for white balance, a normal daylight balance (between 5400-5500K) should work well, assuming you’ve got no other lights polluting the scene. If you have doubts, you can always shoot in RAW and then correct for white balance later.

Is a wired or wireless camera remote better?

I have a Canon XSi camera and I’d like a remote shutter release for it. The wired and wireless are almost the same price at the nearest camera store, but I’ve heard the wireless remote only work from in FRONT of the camera, and not from any other position. I’ve heard that it can be a little finicky even from a front angle. Is this true? Which should I get? Also, how far away does each work from?

Any info is helpful. I live in Canada, so no US site links please.
The reason I would lean towards wireless is that I don’t have to stand near the camera and I’m not touching it in ANY way, thus no chance for camera shake because of me moving. Also, if I want to be in the shot, it’s easier than setting up a timer and running into position.

Yes it is true that wireless remotes have their receptor in the front therefore only works from in front of camera and not at back or sides. The wired on the other hand allows you to use it from all directions which is very good. I would get the wired, they are both abouts the same but performs much better than wireless. totally up to personal preference and whether you want to use it from different directions.
